Damaged Hair Treatment
Help for Damaged Hair
Q:I use styling products and blow-dry my hair every morning. As a result, my hair feels really dry and straw-like. Have I damaged it permanently?
A:Probably not, but first, let's define damage. In the hair business, 'damage' means that the hair cuticle is roughened, cracked, chipped or even worn off. There's a long list of things that can damage hair: washing hair too frequently or vigorously; constant combing and brushing; using blow-dryers and styling implements that are too hot; bleaching, dyeing, perming and straightening are all culprits. Even swimming in saltwater can dry and damage hair if you do it often enough. Using certain products can help your hair, but no matter how extravagant their claims, damaged hair can't be permanently repaired. The only solution is to wait for new hair to grow out and to develop healthier maintenance habits.
In the meantime, however, there are ways to make your hair look less damaged. Avoid washing it every day unless your scalp is oily. When youd. Avoid washing it every day unless your scalp is oily. When you do wash it, use a conditioner that contains proteins and humectants, including glycerin, panthenol and quaternium-22 (check for these on the label). These ingredients help bind water to the hair to reduce dryness. If your scalp is oily, only apply conditioner to the ends as putting it on the roots will weigh it down. When you dry your hair, gently squeeze out excess water with a towel - don't rub your hair vigorously - and be extra careful when combing it out as hair is weakest when it is wet. Finally, add a drop of silicone serum to help smooth down the hair cuticle and add a bit of shine.
